Abstract
Tetraploid hybrids of Anemone coronaria were bred.
Selected hybrid combinations between TETRANEMONES® (synthetic varieties bred at the INRA Fréjus station) and tetraploid plants obtained after doubling MONA-LISA® cultivars with colchicine, were identified.
The main effect of tetraploidy is to improve agronomic and aesthetic characteristics.
In comparison with TETRANEMONES®, the general performance of these hybrids was better in terms of quality and homogeneity.
The high level of heterosis which occurred is probably due to the original differences between the two populations used at the start.
Seed production by self pollination of genitors was chosen as a way for multiplication of parents on a large scale.
Each progeny was then used as genitor for hybrid production.
One generation of selfing limits inbreeding phenomena without decreasing the quality and homogeneity of such hybrids, except for the colour layout of bicoloured types.
Characteristics of these varieties, relation between ploidy level, phenotypes and physiology are discussed.
