VEGETATIVE PROPAGATION OF TROPICAL TREE CROPS WITH EMPHASIS ON CACAO (THEOBROMA CACAO L.) AND KOLA (COLA NITIDA, (VENT.) (SCHOTT AND ENDLICHER)

Plant production by cuttings is one of the oldest methods of vegetative propagation and is also one of the most frequently used present-day techniques for the production of clones of various fruit trees (Archibald, 1955; Ashiru and Carlson, 1968; van Eijnatten, 1969; Ibikunle, 1972). Extensive research has shown that many tropical tree crops which are propagated vegetatively come into early maturity and bear fruits within a few years, compared with trees which are raised from seedling material (Ashiru and Quarcoo, 1971; van Eijnatten, 1969; Jacob and Opeke, 1969; Russell, 1955).
