Abstract
Mexico stands at the seventh place in the pineapple world production with 540,000 tonnes of fresh fruit produced in 10,500 ha per year.
Seventy percent is consumed locally as fresh fruit, 25% is used to produce juice and slices and only 5% is exported basically to USA and Canada as fresh fruit.
The most important region of Mexico dedicated to pineapple production is found in Veracruz, Oaxaca and Tabasco states with 74, 12 and 10% of the total production respectively.
The main clone is “Smooth Cayenne”. The harvest during the year is as follow: a) from the end of October to May there is a medium offer of fruit; b) scarcity in August and September and c) excess of fruit production in June and July.
However, with the practice of flowering inhibition, growers can achieve a constant fruit production during the whole year.
There is an estimation of 2,500 growers in Mexico.
The majority of them own between 2 and 5 ha.
There are 100 growers and 5 pineapple companies with 25 to 300 ha.
The planning, establishment and fruit sale are carried out in an independent way by the growers themselves.
The 80% of the pineapple area have 27,000 plants per hectare as an average.
The 10% have 35,000 and only 10% more than 50,000. Around 90% of the plantation do not have irrigation.
The spray booms are used only in as many as 2,000 ha.
We think that more Mexican growers should turn on towards the pineapple production because the new technology allows competitive production and it would be easier for countries like USA and Canada to buy the fruit from us than to buy it from far away countries.
