Abstract
Angelys is a new pear variety resulting from the cross Doyenné dHiver x Doyenné du Comice. This cross is part of a large breeding programme initiated by B. Thibault and L. Hermann at the INRA Fruit Breeding Station; this programme is a half-diallel involving 12 parents, 68 progenies and 10,626 seedlings with the aim to select late maturing cultivars with long storage ability.
The female parent, Doyenné dHiver is a late ripening variety and the male parent Doyenné du Comice, is well known for its excellent fruit quality.
The tree is medium sized, upright to spreading, and produces heavy crops, consistent from year to year.
High sized fruits are produced on clusters of 2-3 fruits; thinning is not necessary. Angelys is reciprocally pollen compatible with Williams, Conférence, Doyenné du Comice. The fruit is roundish to ovate, with good size but smaller than Doyenné du Comice; the picking time is at the end of September in the Loire Valley, i.e. 10 days after Doyenné du Comice. Fruits have a fine russet over a yellow-green ground colour: 100% russet in the Loire Valley and North of France, less (around 50 %) in the South.
The quality is very well appreciated: excellent taste, fine texture, good flavour, juicy, free of stone cells.
The storage ability is very good at 0.5 °C until March, i.e; about 6 month; after the cold store, the fruit has a long shelf life keeping a good taste after 2-3 weeks.
This variety is a good opportunity to replace Passe Crassane which decreased a lot with the fire blight progression, particularly in France and recently in Italy. Angelys is not resistant to fire blight (medium susceptibility evaluated on shoots) but, compared to Passe Crassane has no secondary blossoms ; this trait could be a great advantage to avoid contamination.
Planting of trees (25,000) was initiated on winter 1999-2000 in the Loire Valley.
