Abstract
The date palm industry in the Republic of South Africa is a new comer to date palm production.
It is geographically far from the known date palm production areas of the world.
For this reason, it has been isolated from the technology available and the markets.
Will the date palm industry survive in the Republic of South Africa? The strengths and weaknesses of date palm production and marketing are highlighted and discussed under the following sections: Location and Growing Areas, Cultivar Selection, Climatic Conditions, Labour versus Mechanization, Production and Harvesting, Marketing and Economic Viability and Sustainability.
