FURANOCOUMARINS IN THE ROOTS OF HERACLEUM PERSICUM DESF.

The roots of Heracleum Persicum De sf. was extracted with petroleum ether, the extract was treated by TLC and column chromatography.
Isopimpinellin, bergapten, pimpinellin, sphondin and isobergapten were isolated and identified.

The genous Heracleum are noted for their rich furanocoumarin content (1–4). Furanocoumarins are effective dermal photosensitizing agents (5), and are widely used in the treatment of leucoderma and in various "suntan" lotions.
Heracleum Persicum Desf (umbellifereae) is an annual plant which grows in the northern parts of Iran (6). The seeds of this plant is used as spices and the young stems are used for making pickles.

This paper describe the investigation of furanocoumarins of the petroleum ether extract of the roots of Heracleum Persicum Desf.
Fractionation of petroleum ether extract by column chromatography and TLC using silica gel G, eluting with petroleum ether and with increasing amount of Et₂O resulted to the isolation and identification of the following compounds: Isopimpinellim, mp 149 –150, bergapten, mp 187–188, pimpinellin, mp 117–119, sphonding, mp. 192–193, isobergapten mp.220–222,.
