A female kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa) vine which carries seedless fruit was found in a survey of wild kiwifruit resources in the west of Hunan Province, China. After being observed for many years, the plant was developed as a cultivar named ‘Xiangji’, which possesses the ability of being able to produce parthenocarpic fruit. It can bear fruit without pollination and the fruit are seedless. Pollination results in fruit containing seed. This is convincing evidence, contrary to what was previously believed, that parthenocarpy can occur in Actinidia. ‘Xiangji’ also has commercial potential.
