TWO POTEXVIRUSES IN NERINE
In the Netherlands the cultivation of various species of the bulbous plant genus Nerine for cut flower production is rapidly expanding.
The total area in 1975 was about 50 ha, of which about 23 ha in glasshouses.
Of several Nerine species, the leaves, flower stalks and flowers may show symptoms, presumably caused by virus.
In two species, Nerinesarniensis and N. manselli, with the electron microscope viruslike particles were detected resembling those of the members of the potexvirus group.
Such particles have been mentioned before to occur in Nerine by Brunt et a1. (1970), Koenig et al. (1973) and Hakkaart et al. (1975). Koenig et al. identified their virus as narcissus mosaic virus.
The present study deals with the identification of the two viruses of N. sarniensis and N. manselli. More details are given by Maat (1976).
